Overview

This book will build on the symposium that resulted in the 1986 book “The paddlefish: status, management, and propagation” edited by J. G. Dillard, L. K. Graham, and T. R. Russell. (AFS, NCD Special Publication Number 7). The purpose of the proposed book would be to determine the current status and knowledge of the biology and management of the North American paddlefish including topics not covered in the 1986 book (e.g., genetics of paddlefish, effects of invasive species). This book will address new topics (genetics of paddlefish, effects of invasive species) and updates of additional information gained in the last 20 years on topics covered by the original book (e.g., management and harvest, culture and stocking, etc.).

The format of the book will be a combination of overview chapters similar to the original book (e.g., biology and life history of paddlefish, threats to paddlefish, etc.), but also include original research related to these topics. Our goal is that the book will be used by agency and resource managers as a reference guide to current paddlefish management and conservation.

Timeline

This timeline is ambitious. I hope we can keep on schedule. The quicker we get chapters, submitted, reviewed, and revised, the quicker the book will be published.

Brief outline of chapter (invited overview chapters only): December, 1 2006

Draft completed chapters completed; sent out to peer review: April 27, 2007

Chapters back to authors for revision: July 1, 2007

Revised chapters due to coeditors: September 30, 2007

Review Process

The review process for each chapter will be similar to a peer-reviewed journal article in an AFS publication. An online submission process is in place and reviews will be handled electronically. To submit your book chapter you first need to create a user name and password at:

http://afsbooks.allentrack.net/

Click on "new authors should register for an account". Once you create an account you will get a home page with instructions for authors. When you begin to submit a chapter, make sure you select from the drop down menu the paddlefish book.
