Opportunities for graduate students

Kansas State University is an excellent environment for graduate student training. Within the Division of Biology, the Ferguson lab is part of the Section of Systematics and Ecology, which includes many strong researchers and excellent facilities.

Undergraduate student research

There are many opportunities for undergraduate student research in the Ferguson laboratory and the Herbarium.

Past undergraduate projects include:

• Corey O'Brien (Spring 2002): Floristic studies of the genus Croton from Paraguay (in collaboration with Mark Mayfield)
  
• Danielle Froelich (Fall 2002): The utility of sequence data from the chloroplast genome in understanding relationships of Phlox
  
• MacKenzie Ostmeyer (Fall 2001): DNA sequencing of chloroplast markers for the genus Phlox
  
• Paul Carman (Fall 2000-Spring 2001): Techniques in molecular systematics; the use of ISSR markers to examine genetic variation in Phlox pilosa subsp. deamii, a putative hybrid derivative taxon
  
• Lauren Padawer (Spring 2000, Washington University in St. Louis): Morphological and genetic studies of Phlox pilosa and P. divaricata at Tyson Research Center, St. Louis, Missouri
