EXCITE! 2009 Summer Workshop

June 22-26, 2009

Girls graduating from the 8th and 9th grades are invited to attend the 7th annual EXCITE! Summer Workshop!

For four days, girls will stay in the residence halls on the K-State campus, interact with faculty and students from science and engineering, visit engineering companies, and do hands-on projects.  There are six tentative workshop tracks to choose from:

·         Bio-Fuels: Learn about how crops are turned into fuels.  Then make your own biofuels from cotton, woodchips, and vegetable oil!

·         Computer Gaming Design: Learn how to create a computer game! By the end of the workshop, you will have a computer game written by you!

·         Green Roof Design: Follow nature's lead in storm water management. Design your own green roof to help capture and re-use rainwater!

·         Robotics: Learn about what makes robots work and what they can do. Then build and program a robot to do jobs for you even when you’re not there!

·         Take Flight!: Explore the principles of flight and investigate how engineers have developed one of one of the safest modes of transportation--the airplane. Learn how engineers are revolutionizing the fuel efficiency of planes while making them faster and more comfortable! Use these techniques to design, build and test your own plane!

·         24-Carat EXCITEment: In this activity you will get a chance to build, and test a nano-sensor all by yourself. Nano-sensors can detect minute quantities of explosives, bio-agents, chemicals, and other dangerous materials. You will work with nano-particles made of Gold!! You will convert these gold-nano-particles into a nano-sensor. EXCITEd?

Join us for an awesome time this summer exploring science, engineering, technology, and math in new, fun, and exciting ways!!  You won't be disappointed!

How much does it cost?
The registration fee of $200 includes room and board, supplies, workshop materials, and a t-shirt.  Participants can choose to bring a small amount of money if they choose but it is not necessary. All meals from lunch on Monday to lunch on Friday are included.  Snacks will be provided during the day and evenings.

A limited number of scholarships are available for families in need of financial assistance. Scholarships are awarded on a case-by-case basis. Applications are reviewed in the order which they are received. Scholarship applications will be reviewed  after the May 15th registration deadline. Acceptance notification letters will be mailed by May 20th. Scholarship criteria include but not limited to:

  • Family income

  • Number of persons living on income

  • First generation college student status (parents did not graduate from college)

  • Latina background

  • Immigrant Status (Immigrant or immigrated status include both those with or without papers)

  • Special individual/family circumstances

Where will I stay during the workshop?

Participants live in the dorms during their stay and have the opportunity to meet other girls from Kansas and other states who are also interested in sciences & engineering.

Participants can indicate the name of another student they would like to room with when they receive their confirmation packet. We will make every effort to make the matches happen. This will not work if the girls choose or are assigned to separate tracks.

K-State female undergraduate students serve as mentors. Two mentors are assigned to each track (about 10 girls per track). The mentors stay with their group throughout the entire workshop, including staying with them in the dorms.

What about transportation?

Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from K-State.  Dormitories are within walking distance of on-campus activities; buses will be provided for transportation to the industry tours.

How do I choose a track?
Once you register, you will receive a confirmation packet where you will rank the tracks you are interested in. We will do our best to get you one of your top three choices. You will only participate in one track. Assignments are made on a first-come first-serve basis.
