Shadow Day

Friday, September 24, 2010

Okay ladies! This is your chance to see what a typical day at college is like for a female science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) student. You will go to class with your mentor, explore campus life, have lunch and attend a workshop called "How to Choose a College Major that is Right for YOU".

Be aware! You will sit in on college classes and will not understand everything that is discussed. We don’t expect you to! This is not about understanding the class; it is about seeing what a college classroom feels like and spending some quality time with a current female college student.

Who should attend this event?

This event is intended for girls currently in the tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades. Girls can come on their own, with a group of friends or as a class.

Parents and teachers are invited to attend with their students, however, during the shadow time you will have separate activities.  Adults who attend the event will also be asked to pay the registration fee. Please complete a registration form for adults as well as students.

How much does it cost?
The registration fee of $20 includes event participation and lunch. We will also provide a campus parking pass if needed for an additional $4.

A limited number of scholarships are available for families in need of financial assistance. Scholarships are awarded on a case-by-case basis. Applications are reviewed in the order which they are received. Scholarship criteria include but not limited to:

  • Family income

  • Number of persons living on income

  • First generation college student status (parents did not graduate from college)

  • Latina background

  • Immigrant Status (Immigrant or immigrated status include both those with or without papers)

  • Special individual/family circumstances

What about transportation?

Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from K-State. If you would like to carpool with someone please contact us and we will see if there are others from your area attending the event.

How do I choose a major to shadow?
There is a list of majors available to shadow in the registration brochure and listed below. You will rank your top 5 choices and then we will pair you and another high school student with a K-State student in that major. Assignments are made on a first-come first-serve basis.

As you read through the list of STEM majors think about the following things:

Ø       What are some of the careers or jobs you can see yourself doing (we know you have more than
      just one!)?

Ø       Which of these majors will help me get there?
