What is Sigma Tau Delta?
Sigma Tau Delta, International English Honor Society, was founded in 1924 at Dakota Wesleyan University. Sigma Tau Delta is also a member of the Association of College Honor Societies.

The purposes of the society are:

  1. To give distinction for high academic achievement in English studies to undergraduate and graduate students, and professionals.
  2. To promote interest in literature and the English language on our campus and the surrounding community
  3. To foster and encourage the English studies discipline in all its aspects, including creative and critical writing.

This honorary has over 525 chapters located throughout Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States. Over the years, Sigma Tau Delta has initiated some 225,000 members including Eudora Welty, James Dickey, Laurence Perrine, Howard Nemerov, Roberty Bly, Frank Herbert, Walter J. Ong, Nikki Giovanni, and Stephen Spender.

An international convention is held every year for members from all over the country.

What are the advantages of membership in Sigma Tau Delta?
Not only does membership in Sigma Tau Delta serve as an outward recognition of your accomplishment, it also acts as a source of encouragement to continue scholarly excellence.
Sigma Tau Delta has many incentives for high scholarship:

  • Fellowship: Sigma Tau Delta provides the opportunity for those interested in English language and literature to join with students and persons with similar interests on local, regional, national, and international levels.
  • Scholarships: Sigma Tau Delta offers several $2000-$2500 scholarships for juniors, seniors, and graduate student members.
  • Internships: members are selected each summer for internships with Regnery Publishing, Inc, Washington, D.C., a nonfiction publisher; and Gannett Company, Inc., publisher of USA Today and more than 80 other daily newspapers.
  • Teaching Awards: awards of $1000 are distributed to a number of beginning English teachers on the elementary, middle, and secondary levels.
  • Publishing opportunities in the Sigma Tau Delta journal, The Rectangle. This journal provides members with an opportunity to have creative and critical works published in an international journal.
  • Writing awards: outstanding writing appearing in The Rectangle is eligible for $750-$1000 awards.
  • Professional conference paper awards: a number of $250 awards are given to members presenting outstanding papers at professional English conferences.
  • Regional conferences: these annually held meetings allow students and faculty to gather in their region to participate in English-related professional activities.
  • Annual International Convention: allows hundreds of Sigma Tau Delta members and faculty to gather for three days of presentations, workshops, practical training, networking, and exposure to significant authors and leaders in our field.
