Crockett Johnson Homepage > Disclaimer
The Crockett Johnson Homepage is a triubute to the great cartoonist, illustrator, and author. It has no official affiliation with Ruth Krauss' estate, Crockett Johnson's estate, HarperCollins, the Shoe String Press, Alfred A. Knopf, Wood Knapp Video, Front Street Books, or any other entity that has published or is publishing the work of Crockett Johnson. In July 1998, I began assembling these pages because I couldn't find any Crockett Johnson websites, and I thought that he surely deserved one. Since then, this site has become a virtual museum and research center, which has been a great help for my biography-in-progress of Crockett Johnson and Ruth Krauss: fans and former neighbors have kindly contacted me via the website and offered their recollections or other information.
The site's goal is to be a compendium of information about Crockett Johnson and, as such, it reproduces images and text selectively, in accord with "fair use." As per section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976,
the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified in that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.
The purpose of the reproduced items on these pages is to form a reference guide for use by scholars, teachers, and readers of all ages. "Fair use" notwithstanding, all visitors to the Crockett Johnson Homepage should remember: Johnson's artwork is © by the Estate of Ruth Krauss, and Betty Fraser's artwork (for Castles in the Sand) is © by Betty Fraser. Do not download the artwork from these pages, and do not use anything on these pages for any commercial purpose. Likewise, please note that this is a nonbusiness site. If you are among either Crockett Johnson's or Ruth Krauss' heirs, or if you are one of his publishers, please take my Crockett Johnson Homepage in the spirit in which it was intended and contact me should you have any questions or concerns. If I have failed to display appropriate credit on these pages, let me know so that I may remedy the situation. Thank you.
If you have copyright questions concerning the work of Crockett Johnson, I am not the person to ask. I can, however, tell you this: many of Johnson's books are no longer in print. Most of those still in print (the Harold books, Ruth Krauss' The Carrot Seed) are published by HarperCollins, probably through their Juvenile Books division. Should you wish to contact them, write the Children's Permissions Manager at HarperCollins Publishers, 10 East 53rd Street, New York, NY 10022-5299. Another book still in print is Who's Upside Down? and it was republished in 1990 by Linnet Books, an imprint of the Shoe String Press, Hamden, CT 06514.
Excepting all images and text by Crockett Johnson, Betty Fraser's illustrations (for Castles in the Sand), text by the authors on the "Collaborations" pages, the Apple logo and the Netscape logo, the Crockett Johnson Homepage and its affiliated pages are © 1998-2003 by Philip Nel.
