What Is News?
A Comparitive Look
Compare an article on the same subject
from both the Washington
Times and the New York
Times. Look at everything -- the headline, leads, photograph (if
applicable), language, tone, focus, and anything else that catches
your eye. Make note of as many differences as you find. What do these
differences tell you about the paper that printed each piece? Which
version do you prefer? Why?
