Guidelines for Grading the Creative Assignment: Molly Bang

The essay will be judged by the standards outlined in the other handouts. See, for example, the Guidelines for Writing an Essay, Keys to Structure and Style, Thesis vs. Topic, and so on.

Both the creative portion and the essay should meet the criteria outlined for each option.

  1. Picture: Created a picture using abstract shapes and no more than four colors, including background.
  2. Explanation:
    • Full credit (A)
Explains what effect (or emotion) you were trying to produce, explains experimentation with shapes, sizes, colors, and arrangement and relates those things to one or more of Molly Bang's principles.

    • Most credit (B)
Explains, but in less detail and with less clarity what your picture attempted to accomplish and what difference different approaches made to the problem and how it relates to Bang's principles.

    • Some credit (C)
Neglects to explain some aspects of the picture or of the emotion/effect desired or neglects to relate explanation to Bang's principles.

    • Little credit (D)
Does not explain choices in picture and does not explain their relation to Bang's principles.

So, for option two, your creative work should strive to embody the principles outlined in the assignment, and your essay should make clear the ways in which your illustration embodies these principles.
