CERTIFIED PUBLIC MANAGER PROGRAM

The Certified Public Manager Program (CPM) provides managers at all levels of government a foundation of knowledge and skills in management practice.

Program Objectives

  • Provide public sector employees an opportunity to grow professionally and personally.
  • Foster effective management practices in government agencies.
Program Background

The design of the CPM Program complies with guidelines and standards established by the National Certified Public Manager Consortium and its curriculum requirements. Graduates of the program are eligible for membership in the American Academy of Certified Public Managers.

Program Description

Candidates attend classes in 24-hour blocks once per month (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) for 12 months, a total of 288 contact hours. The topics covered include the following:

State and Local Governments
Legislative Process
Ethical Behavior for Managers
Strategic Planning
Business Writing
Law for Public Managers
Conflict Resolution and Mediation
History and Culture of Kansas
Oral Communication I & II
Organizational Behavior
Political Characteristics of Kansas
Diversity of Faiths in Kansas
Professional Conference

Program Management

The KU Public Management Center, by formal agreement, administers the program.

Admission Requirements and Application Procedures

K-State employees who wish to make application to the CPM Program should:

  1. Be a supervisor or manager;
  2. Have at least one full year of government employment;
  3. Be nominated by their department; and
  4. Be recommended by the K-State Selection Committee

An application for appointment to the Certified Public Manager Program may be obtained from Employee Relations and Training at 785-532-6818. The nomination deadline for the 2006 program is September 15, 2005.

Applicants selected to represent K-State will receive a letter of admission and an information packet from the KU Public Management Center in Topeka.

Program Cost

The cost to complete the program is $2,000 per candidate, paid by the sponsoring department. The fee covers tuition and materials.

Sponsors will be billed for the entire course fee in March 2006. Applicants withdrawing before March 1 of the course year may be replaced in the class or credit may be applied for a participant in the following year. Replacements or credits will not be allowed for withdrawls after March 1 of the course year.
