What is Biomedical Engineering?

Biomedical Engineering is a fast-growing field that combines engineering with the life sciences. It is generally focused on healthcare applications and includes a wide variety of specialties such as:

  • Biomechanics
  • Bioinstrumentation
  • Cell and Tissue Engineering
  • Medical Imaging
  • Medical Equipment
  • Prosthetics
  • Biomaterials
  • Rehabilitation Engineering
  • And others...

As the list above would suggest, some areas require very specific and different skill sets with respect to other areas. In response to the continually growing need for biomedical engineers, K-State launched an undergraduate biomedical engineering program in fall 2018.

The future looks bright for biomedical engineers! The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that employment of biomedical engineers will increase by 62% this decade.
