Sample EPT Questions
For incoming students the purpose of the test is to identify any weaknesses in their English skills. Based on the test results, the English Language Program will recommend courses to correct those weaknesses so that students can succeed in their classes at KSU. It will be announced before the test, where and when to expect your results.
The test takes approximately two hours and consists of the following parts:
(39 pts) a. an essay on an assigned Topic (35 min.)
(57 pts) b. a listening test (30 min.)
(57 pts) c. a structure test (25 min.)
(57 pts) d. a reading (35 min.)
Directions: Choose one of the following Topics and write an essay. Try to write as much as you can, but write carefully. Use both sides of the page. We will be looking at your organization and the development of your ideas as well as the correctness of your English. You will have 35 minutes to write. Remember to save enough time to check your work when you finish.
Topic 1: Different people feel that different things are important for friendship, such as honesty, loyalty, etc. Explain and discuss some (two or three) of the things that you think are most highly valued in a friendship.
Topic 2: It is said that one of the most important qualities to have is a sense of honor. Do you know someone whom you consider to have a good sense of honor? Describe that person's sense of honor, using illustrations and examples.
Listening Test -- Part 1
Directions: You will hear a sentence spoken one time. After you hear the sentence, read the four answers. Decide which answer is exactly the same as the sentence you heard. Then find the number on your answer sheet and fill in the circle of the answer you have chosen.
Listen to the following example:
You will hear: He had a good time at the party.
You will read:
- He had a good party.
- It was a good party.
- It was a good time to have a party.
- He had a good time at the party.
Choice d, He had a good time at the party, is exactly the same as the sentence you heard. Therefore, choice d is the correct answer.
Listening Test -- Part 2
Directions: In this part of the test, you will hear 25 statements. Each statement will be spoken just one time and will not be repeated. After you hear the statement, read the four answers and decide which is closest in meaning to the statement you heard. Then find the number on your answer sheet and fill in the circle of the answer you have chosen.
Listen to the following example:
You will hear: George has just returned home from vacation.
You will read:
- George is spending his vacation at home.
- George has just finished his vacation.
- George is just about to begin his vacation.
- George has decided not to take a vacation.
Choice b, George has just finished his vacation is closest in meaning to the statement, George has just returned from vacation. Therefore, choice b is the correct answer.
Listening Test -- Part 3
Directions: In this section, you will hear short conversations and lectures. Each will be repeated only once. Then there will be several questions about the dialogue or conversation.
Listen to the following example.
Man: I think it might rain today, but I could be wrong.
Woman: You are often wrong about the weather, but this time you might be right. The weatherman says there is a storm on the way.
Man: The farmers must be happy to hear that. I read in the newspaper recently that the crops really need rain.
Woman: I've heard a lot about that too. I'm sure it must be true from all that I've heard.
Then you will hear the questions:
Example: What does the woman think about the man's weather predictions?
- He is usually correct.
- He is usually incorrect.
- He must say true things
- He likes rain.
The correct answer to the question What does the woman think about the man's weather predictions? is b, He is usually incorrect. You would mark b on your answer card.
Structure -- 50 questions
Directions: Choose the one correct answer for each question. On your answer card, completely darken the circle containing the letter of the correct answer.

Jeans are the most popular kind of clothing in the world. They are popular almost everywhere--in Japan, France, Indonesia, Canada, and Brazil. Young people and even some old people wear them too. Why are they popular? Who made the first jeans?In 1849 two men discovered gold in California. Men from the rest of the United States and other countries hurried there to look for the gold too. These miners needed good strong clothes.
A young man from Germany named Levi Strauss arrived in California in 1850. He went there to sell things to the miners. He saw that the miners needed strong pants, so he began to make them. He used cloth that people make tents from. He put rivets on the pockets to make them strong because the men put rocks in their pockets. These pants were very strong and lasted a long time. The pants became very popular immediately.
