138 Student Learning Outcomes

Beginning English II (DAS 138) Listening

A student who successfully completes this course:
Has sufficient basic vocabulary to participate in life-skills based conversations
Can respond appropriately to basic conversational English
Can follow more complete oral explanations/directions
Can complete basic dictation exercises
Can identify order in basic English discourse
Can connect main ideas to supporting details
Can answer simple questions based on a short listening activity
Can list basic information in a short listening activity

Beginning English II (DAS 138) Speaking

A student who successfully completes this course:
Can state point of view
Can start, maintain, and end a conversation
Can use simple vocabulary on familiar/personal topics
Can use grammar from previous level: future (will/going to), wh q’s, present simple, yes/no with do, present continuous, pronouns, comparatives, and quantifiers)
Can use at level grammar when speaking: questions w/how, prepositions of place, present perfect, simple past, modals, superlatives
Can produce consonant and vowel sounds, and begins to produce suprasegmentals
Can read level-appropriate material aloud
Can follow and participate in conversations at level

 Beginning English II (DAS 138) Written Communication

A student who successfully completes this course will be able to:
Comprehend and use be and have in present, past and future tenses
Comprehend  and use simple present and progressive
Comprehend and use simple past and past progressive
Comprehend and use simple future and be going to
Comprehend and use modals in the present (could, had to in the past
Identify infinitive structures and use them to express purpose
Identify and use count and non-count nouns and common quantifiers
Analyze a sentence, and identify the parts of speech of its parts (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun)
Comprehend and use comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs
Write simple sentences (affirmative, negative, and interrogative) with correct capitalization, punctuation, word order and correct subject-verb agreement
Write compound sentences (but, so, and, or) correctly
Write complex sentences with time clauses (after, before, when, while)
Write a paragraph (8-10 sentences) that has:
 - correct paragraph format
 - a topic sentence, supporting sentences and a concluding sentence
 - a logical flow of ideas
 - transition words
Recognize and correct mistakes in capitalization, punctuation, sentence structure, verb forms,  and other grammatical points covered at this level

Beginning English II (DAS 138) Reading

A student who successfully completes this course will be able to:
Preview and make predictions
Understand simple questions
Identify topics/categories, main ideas, and details
Answer different types of comprehension questions
A student who successfully completes this course will be able to:
Understand and use first 900 English words and their collocations
Guess new words in context
Recognize past participle
A student who successfully completes this course will be able to:
Understand the importance of reading rate
Identify and use simple strategies to increase reading rate
Complete reading tasks within specified time
Classroom and Test-taking skills
A student will be able to:
Use skimming/scanning techniques to answer questions
Pronounce and spell new vocabulary
Use a dictionary – English only
Respond to readings with a sentence
Discuss readings
Use paced/timed readings to increase reading speed
