STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE
It is very important to buy health insurance. In the United States, the government does not pay for everyone’s health needs. All students admitted for fall 07 must buy it (unless they received a special letter dated March 5, 2007). Spouses and children of students do not need to buy it. However, we strongly recommend that the enrolled student in the family buys health insurance. If a spouse or child gets ill or has an accident, the student in the home may not be able to pay the hospital because it is so expensive. Lafene Health Center can help you with common problems and needs. However, if you get hurt in an accident you must go to hospital.
YOU MUST HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE BEFORE YOU CAN ENROLL.
You can buy insurance when you get to the campus. Many students buy the plan supported by the Kansas Board of Regents. You can get help with purchasing health insurance in the Office of International Programs, 3rd floor, Fairchild Hall but you can also go to www.UHCSR.com to get complete information AND to enroll.
If you have insurance from your home country, bring all the paper work with you. International Programs will check if it pays for everything you need. Also, please understand that if your insurance from home does not have a U.S. address, you will have to pay the doctor and hospital. Then you will have to ask your insurance company to pay you back. If your company has a U.S. address, the doctor and hospital will send bills directly to them.
Finally, if you go to any doctor or clinic, **always ask for a receipt; **
The United Healthcare Plan
The student health insurance plan offered by United Healthcare is a sickness and injury policy. This means if you get sick or hurt, the insurance company will begin payments. However, it is not a preventative health care policy. It will not cover things such as immunizations (shots) or medications for stopping a smoking habit (see sections on exclusions and limitations).
Does the insurance plan pay for eye treatment?
No. But, you can purchase a separate discount card. You can use this card to pay less for eye care—between 15 and 40%. See www.studentresources.com for more information about this.

Exclusions and pre-existing conditions
An exclusion is a service that your policy will not cover. A pre-existing condition is an illness, symptom, or diagnosis you had before you took out the policy. Some policies will never cover pre-existing conditions, while others will consider the condition after a waiting period.
What are you responsible for?
You must pay for anything that is not covered by the policy. The deductible, the co-payment, and any amount above the maximum level benefit. You must also make your renewal payments.
