Probation Letter

_______________, 2007

Dear Student,

This semester you were on probation because you failed to get credit in your classes last semester. At the beginning of this semester you signed a contract that you would average 85% in:

  • Class Attendance
  • Number of assignments completed
  • Number of quizzes/tests taken

It is now the end of the semester,

_____You have received credit in your classes and done the required work.

_____You have failed to meet the requirements of probation by not having the required level in the following:

___% attendance

___% homework

___% in-class work

Because of your performance this semester, your teachers and I are recommending the following:

___ No more probation

___ No more probation but a repeat of some/all classes at this level due to lack of progress

___ Continued probation and placement based on your test scores

___ Continued probation but repeat some/all classes at this level due to lack of progress

___ Dismissal from the program

Comments from teachers:

Criteria for continued probation include:

  • a grade of No Credit while on probation
  • absence from the EPT at the end of the semester while on probation

Criteria for repetition of a class/level include the following in addition to No Credit:

  • attendance/homework percentages of less than 70%
  • poor performance on in-class work
  • lack of progress shown by the EPT and in-class work

Criteria for dismissal include:

  • grades of No Credit in all classes while on probation
  • attendance and/or homework percentages of less than 60%
  • failure to get off of probation for two consecutive semesters

You have the right to argue this decision. If you want to appeal a continued probation decision, give your reasons to the ELP director in writing within 30 days of the release of semester results.

IF you want to appeal a dismissal decision, give your reasons to the ELP director within 30 days of the release of semester results. You may pick up a form from the ELP office, or submit a letter.

If you do not give us a letter, we will understand that you have accepted this decision. If you have questions, you can ask the ELP Assistant Director, Beverley Earles or the ELP counselor, Leena Chakrabarti.
