In an effort to provide international students with quality English instruction, the following courses have been developed. These courses will be offered in the fall, spring, and summer semesters
Review of basic English grammar, practice of basic grammar in writing, review of grammar usage in academic writing, and practice in proof-reading and editing of work The course does not deal with issues of organization, rhetoric, or research.
Instruction in academic reading skills. Includes practice in increasing reading speed, developing an academic vocabulary, and improving critical reading and test taking skills.
Instruction in academic writing skills in order to improve the writing of reports, analyses, and summaries. Includes grammar review, the study of style, and development of an academic vocabulary.
Instruction to improve listening comprehension and note-taking skills. Instruction in conversational speaking, with an emphasis on developing oral fluency and the effective use of vocabulary and idioms. Includes pronunciation practice, group work and short academic presentation.
Instruction in speaking for non-native speakers of English to improve comprehension of non-simplified conversational English. Practice of communication skills in a variety of situations as well as the pronunciation of troublesome English sounds and intonation patterns.
An advanced, combined-skills course to improve the reading, writing, and speaking skills of non-native speakers of English This class was designed for students who wish to continue to improve their language skills to reach personal or professional goals.
The class is voluntary. Students do not have to take the English Proficiency Test to enroll in the class, but it is recommended. Students must show a minimal level of language proficiency to enroll in this course in one of the following ways:
TOEFL score of 550 with part scores of 54.
Students enrolled in DAS 181 are not required to take the English Proficiency Test at the end of the semester but may opt to do so if they wish.
