Tutoring and Course work Assistance

Tutoring

In addition to other tutoring resources available on campus, tutoring is available to DSS students through Educational Supportive Services and The Academic Assistance Center, both located in Holton Hall. Tutors are typically available for freshman and sophomore level courses. DSS students should apply for tutors through the DSS office; DSS staff will assist in filling out the tutor request forms. Students should request sign language interpreters at the time of application, if necessary.

Writing assistance is available through two sources:

  • The English Department Writing Center. Located in the English/Counseling Services Building in Room 122D, the Center is available to students enrolled in English Department classes. Writing Center tutors are also Expository Writing instructors and are familiar with assignment expectations. Two types of assistance are available: Writing Lab (ENGL 030) and walk-in appointments.
  • Educational Supportive Services, located in Holton Hall 201, makes their Writing Specialist available to DSS students. DSS students must be referred to the Writing Specialist through the DSS office. The Writing Specialist holds a Master's in English, and is familiar with the curriculum from a wide range of writing-intensive K-State courses, including Expository Writing, Sociology, and other required course work. In addition, the Writing Specialist can help students draft scholarship and graduate program applications.
Mathematics
  • Math Placement: A math placement test is available for students entering K-State. This test helps each student enroll in the math course most appropriate to his or her preparation level. Accommodations are available to DSS students upon request.
  • Math Review: Students may enroll in a math review course designed to build student competency with arithmetic.
  • Intermediate Algebra: A self-paced, modular course designed to build student skills in algebra, this course prepares students for enrollment in College Algebra.
