Technology Assistance

Kansas State University offers a rich technological experience to K-State students. Courses, Libraries, and other information sources are all available online, and efforts are being made to ensure the accessibility of these resources.

Personal vs. University Responsibility

The University is responsible for providing accessible technology for students with disabilities if that technology is also available to students without disabilities. The University is also responsible for providing accessible technology as it relates to required course work and information resources, as well as access to the online components of academic and administrative departments.

The student is responsible for providing personal devices such as wheelchairs, laptop computers, and personalized mouse devices (such as a mouth pointer). Furthermore, the student is responsible for all technology used at the student's place of residence, whether in the residence halls or in a private apartment.

The students is responsible for properly registering with DSS prior to requesting accommodations.

Computing Resources, General

The following resources are available to all K-State students:

  • The Information Technology Assistance Center (iTAC) Help Desk is available as a first point of contact to students with technological questions and problems. Help Desk staff are very computer-literate and willing to help walk you through difficulties you may encounter.
  • iTAC also offers resources like the Media Development Center, where students have access to a wide variety of hardware and software, as well as training.
  • Computing and Network Services maintains resources for web creation, as well as other technology resources. CNS also maintains computer labs across campus. Each computer lab has "Zoom Text" software which allows users to magnify all or portions of the computer screen.

Computing Resources for Students with Disabilities

DSS maintains an Adaptive Technology Lab in Hale Library, room 213. Students must be registered to use Adaptive Tech Lab resources.

Training on software and hardware available in the Assistive Tech Lab is available through DSS.

Courses that Integrate Technology

K-State offers a variety of online degree programs and other courses through the Division of Continuing Education. In addition, most K-State instructors make at least some use of K-State Online for f2f (face-to-face), or local, course work.

The use of technology in the classroom opens many doors to students with disabilities, but also has the potential to create problems with access to course work and resource materials.

The Accommodations Specialist in the DSS office is responsible for working with faculty to ensure accessibility of online courses and courses with online components. Students who need to arrange accommodations for courses that integrate technology should click on the "Online Courses" link at the left of this page or contact DSS for assistance.
