Arranging Accommodations for For-Credit DCE Courses and Great Plains IDEA

Evening College and Intersession Courses

Evening College refers to a set of courses located on or near the K-State campus that are offered for-credit. Intersession courses are offered in between regular semesters (hence inter-session) in May, August, and December. Students with disabilities enrolled in Evening College or Intersession courses receive accommodations directly through the office. Students should request and pick up accommodation letters at the DSS office in 202 Holton Hall.

Distance (Online) Courses

Online courses through DCE take place online and students do not see their class or instructor in person. Students may be distant or local (Manhattan residents). Regardless of physical location, if a student enrolls in a distance course he or she should contact Disability Support Services at dss@k-state.edu, or phone (785)532-6441.

Contacting DSS upon enrollment in the course means that accommodations can be arranged in a timely manner. Depending on the nature of the disability and the technology used in the course, course materials may require modification.

Distant students should follow this procedure:

    1. Fill out and submit the online application form.
    2. Send a copy of appropriate documentation. For more information on documentation requirements, see our Documentation Guidelines page.
      • A specialist will review your documentation soon after it is received. You will be notified if your documentation meets requirements or if we need more information prior to providing academic accommodations.
    3. Once your documentation has been approved, you will meet with our Adaptive Technology Specialist over the phone, e-mail , or chat and discuss accommodations. Each semester you can request accommodation letters to be sent to your faculty members.
    4. Contact your instructor to discuss arranging accommodations. It is the student's responsibility to contact the instructor; the instructor can only provide accommodations after the student makes contact.

K-State instructors are excellent and willing to work with students with disabilities. However, in the event that a student encounters difficulty arranging accommodations, do not hesitate to contact DSS.

Great Plains and AG* IDEA Courses

If you are a Great Plains or AG* IDEA student and K-State is your home institution you can register for accommodations through DSS. Simply follow the guidelines for Online Students. When you take a course at another institution, DSS will contact that institution and make arrangements to transfer your accommodations. We want to make this a simple process for you and our Adaptive Technology Specialist can answer any questions you may have.
