Notetakers

Notetakers are available for students with disabilities such as hearing, visual, and cognitive impairments. If you believe a notetaker would be helpful to you, please discuss this option with DSS staff.

Students should register with DSS prior to requesting accommodations.

The notetaker will be a student who is already enrolled in the class. To recruit a notetaker:

  1. DSS will communicate with the instructor regarding the need for a notetaker and will provide the instructor with instructions to find a volunteer notetaker.
  2. The instructor will use instructions provided by DSS to recruit a volunteer notetaker for that class. Names of students with disabilities are not used when instructors make the request.
  3. Once a notetaker is located, the notetaker will be asked to come to DSS to make copies of their notes at no cost.
  4. Although it is not required, it is best practice for the student needing a notetaker to identify themselves to the notetaker. This will make the process more efficient.
  5. The notetaker will either leave notes at DSS for the student to pick up or can give a copy of the notes to the student during class.
  6. The student should notify DSS staff immediately if he or she is not receiving notes in a timely fashion. If DSS is made aware, early on, that a student lacks notes, staff can attempt to rectify the situation.
