New Students to K-State FAQ on Disability Support Services

Welcome to K-State! Our mission is to provide equal opportunity and access for every student. Here are answers to some
of our most commonly asked questions.
What do I need to do first to get the help I need?

Complete an application, provide documentation of your disability, and then meet with a staff member.

What help is available?

DSS provide academic accommodations to eligible students such as extended time on tests, administration of tests in a distraction-reduced environment, textbooks in alternate format, housing accommodations, and sign language interpreters.

How do I get the help, such as extra time on my tests?

Complete a Letter of Accommodation Form.

Within three days, you can pick up your Letters of Accommodation from DSS and deliver to your professors. This gives you the opportunity to speak to your professors directly about your accommodations, such as extended time on tests.

Complete a Test Request Form with your professor and return it to DSS.

Typically, your professor will want you to come to the DSS Testing Center in Holton Hall to take your tests during the same time as the other students. There may be instances when you may need to take it at a different time due to your class schedule.

How do I get a tutor?

Complete a Tutor Request Form at DSS. Free tutoring is available for many freshmen classes. A Writing Specialist is also available to DSS students. For more information, see our listing of Academic Resources students with disabilities often use at K-State.

Are there any transportation services for students with temporary injuries or permanent disabilities?

Yes. Transportation is provided as a courtesy by the University to assist students in getting to their classes.

I am living in the residence halls. How do I get housing accommodations?

Please see our Disability Housing Accommodations Procedures & Guidelines.
