Letters to Instructors

Upon request, DSS writes Accommodation Letters for students to provide to their instructors. These letters explain that the student has a documented disability and state what academic accommodations are appropriate for the student. Students who want an accommodation letter for their instructors should complete a Request for Letters form each semester.

Requesting and Picking Up Letters

Follow these instructions to ensure timely accommodations in your courses:

  1. Complete the Request for Letters form either online or in the DSS office as soon as possible after you enroll. If you request letters prior to the beginning of the semester, they will be ready to pick up a few days before the first class. Otherwise, expect a 3-day wait to receive your letters.
  2. Pick up your completed Accommodation Letter packet from DSS. If you will be using test taking accommodations, a staff member will review your responsibilities with you at that time. You can review these responsbilities at any time at www.k-state.edu/dss/testing.html
  3. Make an appointment to deliver the Accommodation Letter to each instructor. It is your responsibility to deliver these letters and to discuss specific accommodations with your instructors. Accommodations will only apply to course work from the date you gave your instructor the Accommodation Letter.
  4. Follow up with your instructors, note-takers, or testing arrangements as appropriate. DSS arranges for accommodations; it is the student's responsibility to establish and maintain conversation with the instructor and to keep up with the student's responsibilities.
