What to do when students need counseling services

Faculty members and academic department heads are vital in the process of identifying students who may have personal concerns. You are an important link in making timely referrals to this service. About one in every six students who come to the University Counseling service is a result of a faculty referral. Realizing that this is not an easy process UCS has developed information to assist faculty in the identifying of problem symptoms and suggest ways to make a referral.

There are also times when faculty would like to consult with one of their counselors concerning the behavior of a student or want to assess the appropriate steps for handling a specific situation. Telephone consultations are available by calling UCS (532-6927) between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. and requesting the On-call counselor. The Director, Dr. Fred Newton, or the Assistant Directors, Dorinda Lambert and Dan Wilcox are also frequently called upon to meet and provide mental health consultations with a variety of student concerns. Additionally, presentations are frequently made to organizations and classes, upon request, on a variety of mental health topics. You can find a more complete description of counseling services and the process for student access at: www.ksu.edu/counseling.

The mission of the Counseling Service is to provide professional counseling assistance to Kansas State students. The emphasis of service is to provide brief intervention in a student's life that may assist in decision-making, skill building, or mental health support. The overriding goal for all students is to help them maintain successful academic progress. We accomplish this goal through individual and group counseling, workshops, biofeedback training, testing, consultation, teaching, and/or outreach presentations.
