FIRST TOURNAMENT SURVIVAL PACKET

BEFORE LEAVING:

á      Make sure you have the 1AC and your aff evidence.

á      Make sure you have your neg files.

á      Make sure you have the new stuff which just came out.

á      Have supplies: pens, paper, folders, and maybe a stopwatch.

á      Bring your own towel just to be safe.

á      Organize arguments into folders and label them. Make them accessible.

á      Locate your shells and have them easily available.

á      Read through your arguments, ask questions.

AT THE TOURNAMENT:

á      Get coaching, do round report form, have pairing, paper and pen when you come for coaching.

á      Don't delay before and between rounds.

á      Eat during the day. Drink lots of water. Avoid caffeine-sugar roller coaster.

ON THE AFFIRMATIVE:

á      The 2A is in charge.

á      Get their shells in CX at beginning so 2A can look at them.

á      If you can't figure out what to say, ask your partner. Have them write it out.

á      Always write things out completely & neatly, no abbreviations, if you want your partner to use it.

ANSWERING TOPICALITY: (see CODE textbook)

á      You need a definition of each word.

á      In CX ask them: how many topicality violations, which words are they on, explain the violation. This should help a lot. You lose when you mishandle topicality.

á      When you answer topicality, use three ways:

-Here is our definition, we meet it.

       -We meet your definition.

-We don't have to meet your definition because it is inferior.

ANSWERING COUNTERPLANS:  (see CODE textbook)

á      Negative is often counterplanning alternate agent to do the plan.

á      Find reasons why we should do the plan AND the counterplan, this defeats the counterplan.

á      Find reasons why the counterplan alone would not gain your advantage.

ANSWERING DISADVANTAGES: (see CODE textbook)

á      Have several answers. Number them 1-2-3.

á      Don't waste time re-explaining their argument, just answer it.

á      Ask them to explain it in CX if you don't understand it. Get their shells.

GIVING AFF SPEECHES:

á      1AC: Practice and time it in advance. Know it.

á      2AC: Use some prep (2-3 minutes). Answer ALL negative issues. Don't drop topicality.

á      1AR: Use some prep (2-3 minutes). Answer all negative issues. Don't drop topicality or aff solvency.

á      2AR: Win the issues and weigh the issues.

ON THE NEGATIVE:

á      The 2N is in charge.

á      Prep before the debate (after talking to coach).

á      Always use all CX time (it is your partner's prep time).

HOW TO BE A FIRST NEGATIVE:

á      Stand up right away for 1NC. Read shells and attack case with case cards. 2N will help.

á      Pick your issues - what 2NC will cover and what 1NR will cover.

á      Flow 2AC answers to YOUR argument very carefully. Get them all.

á      Prep your 1NR during 2NC and CX of 2NC.

á      Give 1NR without using any prep time.

á      Keep flowing, help your partner.

HOW TO BE A SECOND NEGATIVE:

á      Help your partner with shells and case stuff for 1NC.

á      Determine division of labor and arguments with partner.

á      Have 1NC give the arguments you will cover in 2NC first in 1NC.

á      Use CX of 2AC to prep.

á      Take 3-4 minutes prep for 2NC to write out answers and organize evidence.

á      In 2NC make sure to deal with EACH ONE of the aff's answers.

á      Kick out of arguments they answer really well, focus on where they are weak.

á      Flow 1NR very carefully. Because it isn't your argument you will need to take better notes.

á      Use 1AR prep time to work with partner deciding how to win the debate.

á      In 2NR choose the winning issues, win them, weigh them.

á      Don't ever drop a disadvantage with turns on it unless you kick out of them (disad handout).

AFTER THE DEBATE:

á      Remember the judge. Listen to them. Take notes.

á      Save your flow. Label it by opponent & tournament.

á      Complete round report form. Give it to .
