Kansas State Debate

High School > Wildcat Debate Workshop > Session Options

One Week

July 10-17, 2011

We recommend this session for students in their first few years of high school debate. While students in these labs will produce research assignments, greater focus will be on refining argument skills, rather than evidence production. Debaters attending this week should be prepared for in depth discussions on the 2010-2011 NFL debate space exploration and development topic , skills workshops, theory seminars and practice debates. The goal of this session is for students to become well-rounded debaters who can easily adapt to any judge defending either side of this year's policy resolution. Although this session is targeted at beginners, our staff will accommodate debaters of all skill levels.

Two Week

July 10-24, 2011

This two week session is directed towards high school debaters of all skills levels. Much like the one week session, this session will focus on research, theory and skills labs concentrating on diverse adaptable strategies over the 2009-10 high school debate resolution. The two week option is distinguished by its intensive hands on research production giving students the expertise to research independently through out the school year, and in depth strategizing sessions giving debaters the pre-round preparation skills necessary to compete in advanced debates. This session concludes with a workshop tournament where speaker and team awards will be given to the top participants.

Stay on campus: $1200.00
Commuter rate: $750.00

Coaches Workshop

July 10-17, 2011

The Coaches Workshop will be lead by Chris Wheatley with assistance from Kelly Thompson. Chris is a former KSU College coach who has spent the past 20 years coaching at the high school level. His teams have won NFL Nationals and awards at many other national tournaments. Chris is widely versed in arguments with a specialty in cross-examinations. Kelly is an up and coming coach who has recently excelled at Hutchinson High. Coaches will have the opportunity to judge debates on panels, attend lectures, and most importantly discuss how to coach and teach debate with other coaches. Numerous curricular materials will be provided. The majority of each day will focus around teaching a concept within debate (researching, blockwriting, rebuttals, constructives, etc). The schedule will allow for ample breaks so that coaches might enjoy the City of Manhattan as well. Because of the support from KSU, Chris Wheatley, and the National Forensics League, the cost of the Coaches Workshop will only reflect the housing/food costs in the dorms.

Coaches who wish to commute and witness any of the events of the week of 17-24 including the end of workshop tournament may do so for free. Please contact jmgreen@ksu.edu to let us know of your arrival.
