NCCA National Championships The Collegiate National Championship is awarded to the top individual and team in men's and women's categories at both the Division I and II level. Team categories include team time trial and team overall which is the highest team point total from all riders on a team in all events. Individual events are the road race and critierium. A National Champion is awarded to both the road race and criterium winner with a third, omnium, to the rider with the highest point total between the two events including point primes during the criterium which could be the winner from the road race and/or criterium. There are only 3 individual National Champions crowned each year in men's Division I collegiate cycling (road race, criterium, and omnium). The National Championship is a very prestigious honor signified by the awarding of the 'Star's and Stripe's' jersey which is worn at future collegiate races the following year in the event the individual won the championship. The National Champion also receives free entry for their events during his/her reign. In 2006 Mark Smelser brought home Kansas State's first Cycling National Championship in the criterium event finishing just 2 points shy of winning the omnium championship as well which was bestowed upon Mark Hardman (University of Virginia) due to the eight prime points won during the criterium race. |
