Wildcats Strong in 2009 Openers (7 February 2009—Lawrence, KS) The KSU squad opened the 2009 road season with a strong showing at the 14th Annual Spring Fling Crit Series. After being snowed out the previous weekend, many of the racers were more than ready to get the season underway. In the women’s Cat4 race, Claire Armstrong started the day off right with a 3rd place finish and newcomer Christine Salisbury also performed well in her first race. Armstrong added a second podium finish for the day as she took home 2nd place points in the women’s Cat3/4 race. On the Men’s side, Brian Snyder did his best to animate the Cat5 race as he sent numerous solo attacks on the main pack. He ended the day claiming 4th place points. Seth Stover also showed improvements since last spring as he finished with the pack in the final sprint. Zach Dubas grabbed sprint points in both primes and the final sprint in the Cat4 race, giving him enough for a win at the season opener. Dubas was also 6th in the Cat3/4 race later in the day. Freshman Carl Beckenbaugh, made his Cat4 debut at the Spring Fling and competed well in both races. Beckenbaugh is looking forward to competing as a Cat C rider for KSU this collegiate season. (8 February 2009—Perry, KS) Sunday brought many of the riders to Perry Lake for the Dam Series road race. Stover again showed signs of improvement as he moved up through a broken pack over the 3 lap course. A cold and blustery morning made for tough racing conditions for the Cat5 field, and Stover was among those having difficulty warming up properly. Mark Smelser made his 2009 debut with a 3rd place finish in the Cat1/2 race while Rich Shurtz climbed his way to 5th place under the clearing afternoon skies in the Cat3 race. In the Cat4 race, Dubas finished 4th in a pack sprint.
