Computer Information Specialist/Systems Administrator - 2 positions

Description

Kansas State University is seeking applicants for two positions of Computer Information Specialist/ Systems Administrator. These positions are responsible for delivering enterprise applications to the Kansas State University campus. Responsibilities include delivery of applications through systems utilizing Microsoft Windows and VMWare ESX Infrastructure technology to provide highly avaliable central campus IT resources. Expertise delivering enterprise, medium and small scale application systems at both the hardware and software levels is required.

Qualifications required

Associate Degree in Computer Related Field and 3 years' experience in administering enterprise-scale Microsoft Windows environments, OR certification as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) with 2 years of experience

Qualifications preferred
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in enterprise Windows administration with specific knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 thru 2008, Windows Active Directory, and Intel processor-based enterprise servers.
  • Experience with VMWare ESX Infrastructure 3 or Vsphere 4 at the enterprise level.
  • A working knowledge of supporting/implementing Microsoft SQL Server, IIS, Sharepoint, and other Windows based applications.
  • Substantial knowledge of the data processing industry and application of enterprise computing systems to complex business information systems problems, with an understanding of project development, project planning, and the development and implementation of project life cycles.
Description of job responsibilities
  • Enterprise Server Operations/Administration

    Provide best practices support of Microsoft Windows systems at the enterprise level for Computing & Telecommunication Services and it's various constituents. Provide solutions for system compatibility, hardware configuration, software configuration, central and distributed application needs, and network connectivity. Maintain a production environment 24 hours/day and 7 days/week. Provide backup services for all related production environments. Prepare and maintain key team support documents and communications channels.

  • Distributed Application Delivery

    Administer systems necessary to deploy applications to the university staff. Provide system resources for development and delivery of the applications. Provide technical support for distributed applications on the client workstation to the Client Services team where necessary in order to support the delivery of those applications.

  • Application Performance and Monitoring/Tuning

    Support procedures for monitoring utilization of the central systems. This includes network traffic, virtual and physical systems utilization, application utilization, and workstation utilization. Evaluate monitoring results and make recommendations for improving effective and efficient technology usage. Consult with administrative system users, network systems analysts, directory services administrators and unit managers to resolve system compatibility and operational problems in order to ensure the efficient and effective use of personnel and equipment during project implementation and production processing.

  • Change Management and Project Planning

    Participate in the Change Management Process. Ensure changes are planned and implemented in a sound low risk manner. The environments supported are highly complex and critical in supporting Kansas State University's business processes. Unanticipated and/or unplanned outages are detrimental to the success of the mission of the university.

  • On-Call Phone Support

    All Unclassified Exempt Full Time Employees are required to participate in rotating on-call phone/data support 24 x 7 for 7 day duration (approximately 7-10 times per year) as defined by CTS Policies & Procedures. This requires carrying a cellular telephone (provided by Computing & Telecommunication Services) and resolving issues related to supporting the enterprise systems.

  • Configuration Planning and Technical Consulting

    Evaluate proposals, specifications, and bids in order to prepare purchase recommendations and purchase orders. Make recommendations regarding cost/benefit analysis and alternate plans.

    Provide technical support in the development and operation of the central IT help desk. Serve as second-level expert help desk consultant for delivery of enterprise systems. Provide support, training and consulting when needed.

Annual salary and benefits

This is an administrative/service unclassified position. Salary range is $50,000 - $55,000 and is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
