COUNSELING SERVICES

AVAILABILITY OF PSYCHIATRIC CONSULTATIONS AT KSU-CS

Who is eligible? To receive psychiatric services through CS, a student must be:

  • a currently registered KSU student,
  • a current client of Counseling Services, and
  • regularly attending counseling sessions at CS as planned with the CS therapist in order to continue to be eligible for psychiatric consultation at this agency. If a client's student status changes or the client completes therapy with a CS therapist but still needs medication monitoring, the therapist will assist in referring the client to psychiatric/medication services elsewhere.

Appointments are scheduled with the psychiatric consultant only on the recommendation of a CS therapist.

Individuals seeking only psychiatric medications (i.e. anti-depressants, anti-anxiety medications, medications for ADD/ADHD, etc) will not be scheduled with the CS psychiatric consultant and are encouraged to contact their family physician, a physician at Lafene Student Health Services, or a psychiatrist in the community. To locate community resources, check the local yellow pages for listings of psychiatrists in private practice or contact Pawnee Mental Health Service, the local community mental health center in Manhattan, KS at 785-587-4300.

There are fees for seeing the psychiatric consultant. There also are charges for appointments canceled with less than 24 hour notice and for missed appointments/"no-shows". The CS therapist will discuss the costs and procedures prior to referring the client to the psychiatric consultant. The client is responsible for paying all fees charged by CS directly to CS. This agency does not accept insurance reimbursement nor do we file insurance forms for the client.

Our current consultant is C. Louis Klobasa, M.D., a licensed physician, Board Certified in Psychiatry in the State of Kansas. As the consultant to CS staff, he comes to our office for a limited number of hours per week and is often scheduled several weeks in advance. Psychiatric consultation sessions are scheduled here at the CS office, not at the consultant's private practice office.

How records are kept of contact with the consultant: All contact with the consultant and any written records regarding a consultation will be a part of the client's CS file and are treated confidentially.

Coordination with off-campus physicians: In order to keep the cost of seeing the psychiatrist low, the client's CS therapist will ask the client to sign a release to allow coordination with their physician. This would allow the student's physician to send pertinent medical information prior to the student's appointment with the psychiatric consultant and, in turn, would allow the CS psychiatric consultant and/or the client's CS therapist to update that physician about medication recomendation and progress as needed. In such cases, only the information pertinent to the management of the medication (including the diagnois) would be shared with the student's physician..

Coordination with Lafene Student Health Center on the K-State campus. If the student is being seen at the Lafene Student Health Center on campus, the CS therapist will have the client sign an authorization to allow the Student Health Center to release records to CS prior to the psychiatric consultant meeting with the client. Information about the medication prescribed and the diagnosis will be sent to Lafene Student Health to be placed in the client's Lafene medical chart. A copy of the authorization form will be retained in the client's medical chart, with the original kept in the client's CS file.

For further details, please speak with a CS counselor.
