What is Project A B C ?
Project ABC is an innovative, research-based
program which began at K-State in 2004. It operates in collaboration
with the Residence Halls, Jardine Apartments, Greek Affairs,
the Student Governing Association, and the Dean of Student
Life office. Project ABC serves as a sanction for students
who have been referred by a Judicial Board, an Administrative
Resolution, or a Chapter for violating an alcohol and/or
drug conduct code. This program is funded in part by a grant
from the City of Manhattan.
The primary objective of Project ABC is for
students to become more self-aware of the effects of their
lifestyle choices on their overall well-being. After taking
various assessments about their lifestyle, students will
be asked to identify areas that they would like to change.
They are then asked to implement a “program of change”
that will enhance a positive lifestyle. Furthermore, students
will develop confidence in their ability to apply this method
of change to other behaviors in their lives.

Available Programs
Project ABC offers both a first and second
level program. The program level is primarily determined
by the referring party and is based upon the seriousness
of an alcohol and/or drug policy violation. Both program
levels will include various assessments, as well as the
development and implementation of a program of change.
First Level Offense
The first level offense program is usually
conducted over approximately two to four sessions with a
Project ABC staff member, and typically takes anywhere from
two to six weeks to complete.
The student will be asked to complete and
discuss the results of two on-line assessments: the electronic
Alcohol Checkup To Go (e-CHUG);
and the Healthy Behaviors Assessment (HBA). The e-CHUG
provides immediate feedback about alcohol use and risks;
the HBA provides information about overall health and wellness.
Additional sessions usually include an in-depth look at
behaviors that help or hinder students’ success, and
the implementation of a program of change. A final session
generally includes a follow-up on what has been worked on
in the program of change.
Project ABC is a confidential service. Notification
of whether or not a student has completed their Project
ABC program will only be given to the referring office,
provided that the student has signed an appropriate release
of information form.
Second Level Offense
The second level offense program is similar
to the first level offense program with the addition of
an in-depth discussion of previous negative behaviors and
problem solving for future situations. It will also include
goal-setting and more frequent contact over a longer period
of time. Typically, this program is completed in approximately
five sessions over five to seven weeks.
