Members Present: Neil Erdwien, Linda Johnson, John Johnson, Bill Richter, Janelle Esau, Bert Biles, Gale Simmonds, Guest: Brad Shaw
The focus of the meeting was three fold, consistency of second level and lower level pages with the University homepage, decisions on photos for the "Eggs", and translation of page information for non-English speakers.
Bradley Shaw, Director, International and Area Studies gave a short but insightful presentation of the availability and accuracy of online language translators.
Chairperson Richter suggested that we have three options:
It would seem that option three is the best route to follow. Option one would mean that none of our pages would be clearly translated ( they all have problems), and option two seems to be prohibitively expensive. The question remaining would be to identify the critical pages which we would want individuals to translate, determine how this could be done and get a handle on the cost and the day to day operations of such an endeavor. The question of which languages was also discussed. Suggestions included: Spanish, Chinese, French, German, Russian, Portugese.
Janelle went through a number of university pages pointing out various consistency problems, readability problems, load time problems, etc. While there was discussion of some of the issues, there was uniform agreement that there are a number of these types of issues that need to be addressed. No decisions were reached at this time. You can view the entire list of sites discussed by going to:

In reviewing the photos for the "Eggs", we agreed that all could go up now and be replaced as better photos were provided. There was discussion about how to get enough photos of the type we want and how to decide which ones go up at any given time. One suggestion for getting more photos was to have a student competition. Another suggestion was to have potential photos submitted by colleges, departments, etc., three or four times a year and the committee could then select from those submitted. No final decision was made.
The final item on the agenda was to set future meetings times. The committee agreed to meet in May, June and July. There was tentative agreement that we would meet on the third Wednesday of these months. The May meeting will be on the 16th from 3-5 in Union 205.
