  • Web Site Design Committee: March 12, 2001 Minutes

Members Present: Bill Richter, Burt Biles, Neil Erdwien, Janelle Esau, Linda Johnson, and Gail Simmonds

Bill called the meeting to order and went over the eight points of the agenda:

    1. Second-level, third-level, and lower-level pages
    2. Templates
    3. Scenarios
    4. Distance Learning
    5. Functionality, Portals and Customization
    6. Web Management Tools
    7. Policies and Comparison with Other Universities
    8. Other

Neil provided information on percentages of hits on popups from CNS servers during March 1--March 11, 2001, and noted some interesting trends. The live version of this image, with percentages in the popups, can be viewed at

    http://www.ksu.edu/committees/webdesign/2001-03-12/link-popularity.html.

Neil also provided statistical information on KSU web growth during the past five years. WOW! Committee agreed that this is the best avenue to communicate to the world.

Another report provided information on the different languages requesting web information. Neil is looking into software to provide accurate translations. Bill will contact Brad Shaw who has collected information relative to this issue.

Neil and Janelle explained additions they have made to the web, i.e. pictures, honor code, links, etc. They are working on campus maps with links to/from Salina.

Gail reported that Salina is using KSU templates on their site to provide the same KSU visual consistency but also maintaining a Salina appearance.

The committee tried to define "second-level" pages. Decision: Second-level pages are the pages "one click from the home page". They are not the pop-ups. The committee decided to take a look at these second-level pages for visual consistency (content, completeness, contacts, unrelated page information, timeliness, navigation, dead links, color, download time). Can you find what you want easily? What can't you find? Where did you look for the item you couldn't find? Committee members need to ask the group they are representing--After using this new site for six months, how is it?

The next discussion revolved around KSU enforced vs. encouraged policies. What are the policies? Should they be enforced or encouraged at second-level and third-level pages? A 1996 draft of the policies can be found at www.ksu.edu/tools/standards (link unavailable). The tools for web publishing can be found at www.ksu.edu/tools What issues do we need to address when web pages involve CNS server maintained pages vs. non-CNS server pages such as DCE, KATS, library...

The meeting ended with the committee adding three issues to Bill's agenda:

    1. Automatic translator link on home page

    2. Compliance with State and Federal Guidelines for webs, i.e. visually impaired

    3. Encouraging the formation of a user's group campus wide and/or provide workshops (face-to-face or on-line) for the web designers managing web pages within units to exchange ideas, learn about KSU templates/standards, design suggestions, share concerns, promote KSU visual consistency, etc.

Bill will poll committee members about availability before scheduling the next meeting with the target being April. He will also ask committee members to review the referenced websites in the minutes as well as to check for consistency with first-level pages. Neil and Janelle open our next meeting with a short presentation on "KSU Visual Consistency".

    Respectively submitted: Linda Johnson
