Computing and Information Technology Advisory Committee

Meeting: September 24, 1998

Minutes

The meeting was held in Room 213 of the K-State Student Union. Those who signed the attendance list were: Jay Alloway, Ken Brooks, Rob Caffey, Mel Chastain, Fred Damkroger, Jeanette Harold, Brice Hobrock, Doug King, Tom Schellhardt, Bradley Shaw, chair, Roger Terry, and Beth Unger.

Shaw welcomed members to the meeting and invited Jeanette Harold, Director, Instructional Technology Assistance Center, to speak to the group on the results of a study of virus protection software for the university, and on the status of "K-State Online." Following her remarks and presentation, Rob Caffey was to speak to the group on the status of Internet2 at KSU.

Virus Protection. Jeanette discussed the findings of a committee she chaired at the request of VPAST Unger to evaluate and recommend a virus protection system that could be available for all platforms via a site license to faculty and staff, and possibly students. Having reviewed and tested everal commercial products, the committee agreed that F-Secure from DataFellows, Ltd. was outstanding and that it presented the best value. Among its most important features are outstanding virus detection and disinfection capabilities via the F-Prot engine, the capacity to update virus definitions each day, and site license features that allow KSU faculty & staff to install the program on office and home computers.

In the discussion several issues were raised by CITAC members. One of the principle issues had to do with the accessability and availability of the virus protection system to students as well as faculty and staff. After the first year, would the cost of the site license be funded centrally, or w loopbackould colleges and departments be asked to share in funding the license. How would the program be distributed to all who qualified to use it?

Doug King moved, and with a second from Tom Schellhardt, that CITAC recommend the purchase of a site license with DataFellows, Ltd. providing that certain issues be clarified: (1) the cost of purchase in subsequent years to units other than the central administratioe issue of distribution off campus (including the problem of availability of the software to remote sites), the availability of the software via the site license to KSU students. It was agreed that Jeanette could respond to CITAC via the listserv and that CITAC gave authority to her to verify that favorable conditions for purchase have been met.

K-State Online. Jeanette demonstrated the basic features of the on-line program that is developed and maintained by the Division of Continuing Education. Faculty are encouraged to use "K-State Online" as much as needed, either to create a full-fledged course or to enhance a more traditional course design. "K-State Online" is available via the KSU webpage. Individual assistance in developing course materials is offered by iTAC.

Internet2. Rob Caffey, Division of Continuing Education. Because Interim Director Harvard Townsend was attending a meeting out of town, Rob explained that the proposal to improve the campus backbone was moving along well. DS3 connectivity in region was on the way. KSU was awarded on 9/25/98 an NSF vBNS grant of $350,000 for two years to help connect to the Abilene Network, a "OC48" network that is the new Internet2 backbone. CISCO has donated $100,000 toward the purchase of router equipment that they provide.

Because it was approaching 5:00, rather than introduce new agenda items, Shaw simply mentioned that the next meeting would highlight the issue of a calendar/scheduler program for the campus. The meeting was adjourned at 5:00.

For CITAC,

Bradley Shaw
