SUBJ: Proposed Campus Network Improvements
The CITAC Campus Network Subcommittee has had little time to review two technical proposalsfor campus network improvements. As a group, we are not capable ofproviding professional technical evaluation of the merits of the proposals, but we generally agree with the recommendation that the Gigabit Ethernet Proposal appears to provide a better basis for incremental improvement of the existing environment at lower cost.
The Subcommittee believes that the planning materials presented for our review are very technical and operational in nature. We would like to see a brief summary describing the underlying goals andprinciples of the Gigabit Ethernet. We believe that such documentation should be designed to provide guidance to administrative units with respect to defining their needs for networking within the overallframework of the Campus Network. One way to help administrative units identify needs is to describe recommended topology between various types ofnetwork components and services. Components and services include the Internet, Internet II, Enterprise Servers, LAN Servers, workstations, desktop computers, portable computers, dial-up access, and various applications andservices. We do not believe that the preparation of such documentation needs to delay the planned implementation.
The Subcommittee would like to thank Harvard Townsend for the opportunity to review the proposals. We hope that this input will be helpful to the process of achieving a successful upgrade of the core of the Campus Networkfrom the current 100-Mgbs Ethernet to the recommended Gigabit Ethernet at the earliest possible time.
