Dr. Dingbo LinDietary Supplements Protect Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells from Apoptosis
The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) maintains the health of the retina by providing structural and nutritional support, largely through gap junctions. Hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress is a key mediator of retinal nerve injury in type 2 diabetes. We use RPE cells and transgenic mice to determine the neuroprotective effects of phyto-chemicals against oxidative stress through rebalance of cellular energy homeostasis by gap junctions.
