  • Time synchronization services

Computing and Network Services maintains two campuswide services to provide reliable, uniform, and standardized time sources for the K-State community.

    Network Time Protocol
The preferred service is named "Network Time Protocol" (NTP3). See the RFC1305 technical specs.

This service yields very precise time synchronization (resolution is one-tenth of a second or better) but requires a more complex client.

    Time Protocol
There is a much simpler protocol named "Time Protocol" (TIME). See the RFC868 technical specs.

This service provides adequate time synchronization (resolution is within a second or two). It is used by the Unix rdate command and various utilities for Windows and Novell systems.

    Year 2000 readiness
The K-State NTP and TIME servers have been tested and are believed to be Y2K ready. Clients using these services should verify that their client software has been checked for Y2K compliance. More information about Y2K readiness at K-State is available at the K-State Year 2000 Readiness page.
