Overview of auto-generated class lists at K-State
last updated June 23, 1998

List owners are automatically subscribed to the class list.  Students are also subscribed (with their @ksu.edu addresses on the central Unix system), based on the Registrar's Office database of students enrolled for the class section(s).

Subscribers who wish to use an e-mail address on another network, such as a K-State college/department server or a local/national commercial network, should:

  1. Subscribe to the class list the usual way (see below).
  2. Ask the instructor to remove their @ksu.edu address or set it to NOMAIL.

Drop-adds by students for the class are processed automatically, with students' IDs being added or removed from the class mailing list once a week, based on weekend updates from the Registrar's Office database. New class members who don't want to wait for the weekend list update can subscribe to the class list the usual way, by sending e-mail to listserv@ksu.edu with the SUBSCRIBE command:

SUB   listname   Your Name

where "listname" is the list ID, and "Your Name" is, of course, their real name.

Instructors can also add and delete members, but it is recommended that students subscribe themselves so that verification of the e-mail address occurs.   As a security measure, personally subscribing to an automated class list will cause LISTSERV to ask for confirmation of the subscription request.   Once confirmation occurs, the subscription request is passed to the owner to allow controlled membership.

Students who enroll for a class with an automated mailing list are subscribed to the class list regardless of whether their IDs on the central Unix system are public or unlisted.   For security purposes, only the instructors (i.e., list owners) are able to review the class list and see the full membership list and IDs.

These class lists will be deleted at the end of each semester, along with removal of the accumulated monthly log files (notebooks).   Instructors who wish to request a new class list for the following semester should use the application process listed above.
