Miller is a Special Agent and Coordinator of the Anti-Terrorism Task Force for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Lecture: The Unknown Shore by Sangram Majumdar. 2:30 p.m., Beach Museum of Art. Sangram Majumdar thinks of his paintings as conversations between the notion of the familiar and the questions it raises through the medium of painting. Working against the factual nameability, the paintings are extensions of this metamorphosis. Free and open to the public. Spencer Lecture: Polynomial Functors in Homotopy Theory by Nicholas Kuhn. 2:30 p.m., 1018, Throckmorton Hall. Kuhn is from the University of Virginia. Lecture abstract: The calculation of the homotopy groups of a topological space is notoriously difficult. By contrast, homology groups are much easier to calculate because they satisfy the nice Meyer-Vietoris decomposition rule. Free and open to the public. Part of the William J. Spencer Lecture Series in the Department of Mathematics.
Lecture: The Creation of Anne Boleyn by Susan Bordo. 5:30 p.m., Ballroom, Alumni Center. This lecture charts how Boleyn has been portrayed very differently over time, from being seen as a figurehead for religious battles, to victim of a tyrannical husband, to wily temptress, to feminist role-model.
