Lecture: The Philosophy of Design: The Structural Engineer's Role in Creating New Architecture by William F. Baker. 4:30 p.m., Forum Hall, Leadership Studies Building. Throughout Baker's distinguished career, he has dedicated himself to structural innovation. His best-known contribution has been to develop the "buttressed core" structural system for the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world's tallest manmade structure. Free and open to the public.

Cats at the Capital: Graduate Students to Present Research That Benefits State. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Docking State Office Building Auditorium in Topeka, KS. Studies that range from the shelf life of meats to improving unpaved roads with plant material are among the research topics that will be presented by Kansas State University graduate students at the Capitol Graduate Research Summit. A motivational speaker known as the Lost Boy of Sudan, Dau is a genocide survivor who has traveled across the world recounting his life experiences during the genocide of the minority population in Sudan. Spencer Lecture: Polynomial Functors in Homotopy Theory by Nicholas Kuhn. 2:30 p.m., 1018, Throckmorton Hall. Kuhn is from the University of Virginia. Lecture abstract: The calculation of the homotopy groups of a topological space is notoriously difficult. By contrast, homology groups are much easier to calculate because they satisfy the nice Meyer-Vietoris decomposition rule. Free and open to the public. Part of the William J.
