- Exhibition: An American in Venice: James McNeill Whistler and His Legacy. April 2 through June 23, 2013, Beach Museum of Art. In 1879 American artist James McNeill Whistler arrived in Italy with a commission from the Fine Arts Society of London to create twelve etchings of Venice. During the ensuing fourteen months, he produced a body of prints that are among the most important of his career. This exhibition presents eleven of Whistler's Venice works alongside prints by other artists who worked in Italy during the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A mingling of perspectives allows the viewer to appreciate Whistler's innovations and his impact on other artists. The exhibition is organized by the Syracuse University Art Galleries, New York.
