university recognition: frequently asked questions
I have accepted a summer internship. Will it qualify for University Recognition?
To qualify, the internship must be a career-related experience, working at least 480 hours, and be approved by your Faculty Liaison.
What happens if I do not turn in my documentation to CES?
If there is a reason your paperwork is going to be late, contact CES immediately. Failure to send in the documentation materials on time will result in your experience being dropped from the program and your losing full-time student status. Loan deferment could also be jeopardized.
Will I have problems scheduling classes while away from campus?
You will be able to complete enrollment using the iSIS system. Your advisor may be able to assist you with any problems you encounter with enrollment.
I have enrolled in classes, but have chosen to participate in an internship/co-op through the University Recognition Program. Should I drop my classes?
Yes, you will need to drop your classes before the semester begins to avoid any fee penalties.
What if my parents’ insurance company needs proof that I am a full-time student while I am participating in the University Recognition Program?
Contact CES. We can send an official letter verifying your full-time student status while participating in the University Recognition Program.
I am participating in the University Recognition Program and will not be enrolled in any classes. Can I work out at the K-State Recreational Services and use Lafene Health Services?
Because you retain your full-time student status, you may use Lafene and Recreational Services.
- Students can make an appointment with Lafene during the semester. You can then pay a visitor fee (good for one visit) or the semester fee (includes unlimited nurse and doctor visits). Students are eligible to use the pharmacy for new prescriptions as well as refills from previous semesters.
- If interested in using the Recreational Center, contact their main office to find out the fee and payment information.
Can I still use my K-State email account while I am away on an internship with the University Recognition Program?
Yes, your K-State email account will remain active while you are participating in the University Recognition Program.
Do I have to pay my student loans while I'm gone?
If you are registered with CES and are participating in the University Recognition Program, you are recognized as a full-time student. If you have loans, your loan payments are deferred and you do not use your six-month grace period. It is always a good idea to contact Student Financial Assistance about your University Recognition opportunity before you begin working. If you are contacted by your loan company, let CES know. We will work with Student Financial Assistance to keep your loans deferred for the term of your work experience.
I have received scholarships. What happens to them if I participate in the University Recognition Program?
Contact the scholarship donor, your academic departments, or Student Financial Assistance prior to beginning your University Recognition experience. CES will write a letter confirming your full-time status, but it is up to your donor as to whether or not they choose to award the scholarship.
I qualify for Financial Aid. Can I receive it while I am on a University Recognition assignment?
If you are enrolled in classes for credit while participating in your University Recognition Program, you may be eligible for Financial Aid depending on the number of credit hours you are taking. If you are not enrolled in classes and are not paying fees, you are not eligible for Financial Aid that semester. Student Financial Assistance will refigure your financial aid package for the semester you return to credit classes. Do not forget to fill out the FAFSA for the upcoming year if you are doing an internship/co-op in the Spring semester. It is always a good idea to check with Student Financial Assistance before you begin the University Recognition Program.
How do I get academic credit for my internship, co-op, or summer experience?
Policies vary by department, so you must explore the option of academic credit with your faculty advisor. Academic credit is obtained only through your department. The University Recognition Program at CES allows you to receive “University Recognition,” yet no academic credit for your experience. This means that the experience is placed on your transcript as follows: “Date of Experience—Internship/Co-op Work Assignment, Company Name.” Participating in this program also allows you to maintain full-time student status with the university.
