Resume guide: create your draft

A resume is no place for modesty. You must share skills and accomplishments, but never, never tell a lie. Obtain references from persons who will support your statements and confirm your skills.

Length

For most undergraduate resumes, a one page resume is adequate; two pages are an option for more experienced candidates. An academic resume or “curriculum vita” may go to five pages.

Verbs

Choose active verbs that describe your skills, abilities and accomplishments. Use present tense for current duties and past tense for prior tasks. (See list of Action Verbs). Take out first person nominative pronouns (i.e. “I”, “my”).

Phrases

Use phrases, not sentences, that are brief, yet descriptive, offering employers a “yardstick” to measure your effectiveness: “Conceived campaign for 20,000 student body election at University.” “Supervised ten employees and a payroll of $10,000 a year.”

Format

Control your reader’s eye by leaving white space and careful use of bold lettering. Important information should jump out at the reader. Balance resume with all four margins about equal.

Production

Use a computer and high quality (preferably laser) printer, with good quality bond paper, conservative in color.
