advice for alumni

Hello, alumni!  My name is Angela Hayes, and I am the K-State Alumni Career Services Consultant. My position is a joint venture between K-State Career and Employment Services and the K-State Alumni Association. I’m here to help you with your job search and career transition needs.

In this tough economy, one key to job search success it to realize the best ways to search for jobs has changed. Online networking and online job search tools have a much bigger role than even a year ago. At the same time, large job boards like Monster.com and CareerBuilder have taken on a smaller role in the typical successful job search. The use of the job search tool http://www.indeed.com will pull in postings from many, many places, including job boards, newspapers, company Web sites and niche sites. This tool can make your job search much more efficient and effective than frequently checking multiple sites.

Social networking as a job search tool

Also keep in mind that only about 20 percent of open jobs are ever placed in a job posting. This underlines the need for you to know what job you want or what company you want to work for and find ways to connect with potential hiring managers.

LinkedIn

An excellent way to find connections is to create a profile on www.LinkedIn.com. Hiring managers and recruiters use LinkedIn to find qualified candidates for open positions. If you don’t have a LinkedIn account, here is an excellent 14-minute tutorial that explains how to set up your profile: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1165004739418

Twitter

Twitter also has become quite a popular place to follow and keep in touch with prospective employers. You can check out my Twitter updates at: http://twitter.com/KStateACS.  These updates include a lot of information about how to conduct a successful job search with links to additional tools and resources.
