experiential learning and university recognition

Employers have long valued internship and cooperative education programs for testing the abilities and “fit” of potential college hires. More and more employers are turning to experiential learning programs to meet their hiring needs.

According to the NACE Spotlight Online, October 2004 issue, employers view internships and co-op programs as an effective method important to their overall recruiting strategy. Additionally, just over three-quarters of employers reported higher retention rates among new college hires with prior work experience, and over 80 percent reported higher retention rates among new college hires converted from their own programs. To be successful, employers should recognize that recruiting interns and co-ops requires an investment of time and resources, which will pay off in the long run.

The University Recognition Program

The University Recognition Program, which is coordinated by K-State’s Career and Employment Services Office, allows students participating in an internship or co-op program to set goals and monitor progress throughout their experience. It is a partnership between the student, Employment Supervisor, Campus Faculty Liaison, and CES.
