Department Templates

(Guidelines and Form)

One of the options that has always been available with either of the student ratings systems at K-State (TEVAL or IDEA) is the option to create additional questions to supplement the core set of items.  Additional questions can be created by the course instructor or by a department for all faculty in that department to use.  It is also possible for a college to create an additional set of items.  The Division of Continuing Education has created a set for those teaching distance courses.

With the Online TEVAL we offer the option of establishing a set of departmental items as a template that can be easily selected by each faculty member and added to the TEVAL core of 14 items when creating the Online TEVAL for a particular class.

The department template is an option.  Some departments will want to create a template; others will not.

Faculty members choosing the paper administration of TEVAL also could use the template.  The form of administration would be different.  In the Online TEVAL Report, we can indicate the actual questions of the template.  The TEVAL Report for the paper version can include only the item numbers of the template questions.  Both reports would include means and frequency distributions of the student responses to the template items.

The system administrator will add the department template to the Online TEVAL system but the department -- faculty members in conjunction with the department head -- will design and approve the set of questions for the template.  A department can edit, modify, change, delete the template by contacting the CATL before the beginning of any semester.  Department templates cannot be edited by the course instructor when creating an Online TEVAL.

All templates will be viewable and usable by all K-State faculty members who create an Online TEVAL.  Making the templates available to public view means that departments could learn from each other.  Let's say that Department A has created a template.  If a faculty member from Department B likes the set of questions, she can add that template to her Online TEVAL.  If she adds the template, she cannot edit the template in any way.  However, she can use the Department A template as a model to develop her own set of additional questions ... or Department B can use Department A's template as a model for their own template.

Guidelines for Departmental Templates.

Deadline:  October 1 or March 1

Department templates must be added to the Online TEVAL System before the date when faculty can begin to create their Online TEVALs.  The deadline for submitting approved templates to the Center will be October 1 for the fall semester and March 1 for the spring semester..

Templates forms are to be submitted to CATL (215 Fairchild Hall, catl@ksu.edu).

It's important to consider what questions will be relevant to all courses taught in the department.

Consider carefully how many items are included in the template.  Given the 14 items in the core set of TEVAL items, we recommend using no more than 10 items in a department template.  If the department also encourages faculty members to add their own questions, then that number should be reduced.

The format for the template items can be the same as that for the core TEVAL items. Template items can also be designed as scale questions, multiple-choice, or short answer -- the same options that are available for faculty members to develop their own additional questions for the Online TEVAL.

Dr. Vicki Clegg will work with a department to develop a template.  She can help in various ways -- meeting with a department committee to consider what might be best included in a template and reviewing the submitted templates, making suggestions as warranted. Feel free to contact Dr. Clegg (215 Fairchild Hall, vclegg@ksu.edu; 532-7828).

In the final analysis, however, the items in the template will be the responsibility of the department.  Please link to the Department Template Form (Word | html ) to submit templates for the Online TEVAL.
