Notification of International Student Center regarding the dismissal of International Students

Sara Thurston-Gonzalez, director of the International Student Center (ISC) has requested that each of the Colleges notify their center when international students are dismissed.  International students only have a 21 day window after they are dismissed to change their Visa.  It is essential that international students know all of their options, and this information can be given by ISC.  Instead of each college sending a list to ISC, Jennifer Gehrt is check to see if a report can be generated and sent directly to ISC.  Each college is also planning to add information to their dismissal letters directing international students to ISC.

The committee also discussed the procedure of dismissing international students.  Most international students must pass through the English Language Program (ELP) and in the process take several classes credit/no credit.  These classes do not impact GPA, but do count as hours attempted.  As such, an international student could take one or two classes for credit – do poorly – and be dismissed.  At this point, the policy is that they should sit out for two semesters before being reinstated.  Most international students will not return if this policy is enforced and may not be in their best interests.

For now, the committee agreed to let each college deal with the special circumstance of each international student.  As we get more and more international students, we may need to look at a more formal policy.

Document prepared by Linda Morse for review and consideration by CAPP

After discussion of the options, it was decided to have Linda Morse send a list of all non-degree students to each college.  The student will then be assigned an advisor who will be able to lift their flag.  In the short term (for Fall 08), DCE can lift non-degree students flags in order to serve them faster.

Changing the deadline for submitting into iSIS the Term Final Grades for Fall 08

It was moved by Delker and seconded by Perl to revise the deadline for submitting into iSIS the Term Final Grades for scheduled examinations given Thursday and Friday of Finals Week from Wednesday, December 24 at 11:30am to Tuesday, December 23 at 5:00pm.  The deadline for exams given Monday through Wednesday will remain Monday, December 22 at 11:30am.  The motion passed.  It was recommended that the provost office be the one to send out an official notice, and Ewanow agreed to speak to Al Cochran about the change.
