Absent:

The meeting was called to order by acting chair, Lynn Ewanow at 10:38.

Larry Satzler, Ray Hightower's replacement, was introduced.

The honor code, and University Graduate Fair were added to the agenda.

Shanklin requested that the following statement be added to the minutes. “Carol Shanklin said that all graduates are requested to complete an exit survey. Since the number of students graduating in some programs is small, the results are summarized and provided to the program once every five years.” The minutes were approved as revised.

Donnelly arrived and assumed the duties as chair.

Donnelly distributed a list of members and asked members to update it.

Non-Standard Class Time Requests

The Statistics Department requested a non-standard time (2:00-3:15, TU) for STAT 904. This course will be taught online by a University of Nebraska professor. This time is standard on the Lincoln campus. Wheatley moved to approve the change for the fall of 2008. Stevens seconded the motion. The motion passed

The Department of Apparel and Textiles requested a non-standard lab time ( 10:30-12:20, WF) for AT 645. The request was made to allow for more efficient use of a laboratory classroom. Pence moved approval for spring of 2008. Shanklin seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Academic Fresh Start and Academic Forgiveness Policy

Wheatley submitted a proposal for changes in the academic fresh start policy and the establishment of an academic forgiveness policy. Hightower submitted an eight-item list to replace the nine-item list in the rationale for changes in the proposed policy. The following sentence was added to the introductory paragraph. “If a student has been dismissed, he or she may not apply for either policy until he or she has been reinstated.” Hightower moved to accept the proposed policy with changes (See attachment in pdf format). Ewanow seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Carroll suggested that we use italics or bold lettering to visually separate the academic fresh start section of the policy from the academic forgiveness section of the policy so that the Academic Affairs Committee could easily distinguish between the two.

Final Exam Policy

The recommendation CAPP sent to Academic Affairs for a final exam policy for one day a week classes was returned to CAPP. After considerable discussion, Wheatley moved to forward the following statement to Academic Affairs for their consideration. “Schedule once-weekly day course exams at their regular class meeting time during exam week.” (effective date: Fall 2008). Ewanow seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Plagiarism Definition

CAPP approved a Plagiarism definition at the March meeting. It is written in the March minutes.

Announcements

Stevens – On October 9 th , most or all of the Division of Continuing Education staff will be on a retreat and unavailable.

Nielsen – Recently the registrar's office employed a full time undergraduate catalog coordinator. The schedule for updating the undergraduate catalog will begin in a few weeks. The 2008-2009 edition of the catalog will be available June 1 st , 2008. That edition will be an electronic version only. The catalog will be updated on a real time basis but will be archived on an annual basis.

Carroll – The General Education Task Force has provided an update to the Academic Affairs Committee. The provost has charged the task force to come up with an implementation proposal for the proposed policy. CAPP members expressed concern that they have not seen the General Education Proposal and would like to see it as well as the implementation proposal. Carroll said there is a three page executive summary that is not yet on the provost's Web site. She said she would ask that it be put on the Web site. Donnelly suggested that we invite Greg Eiselein, chair of the General Education Task Force, to speak to CAPP regarding the proposal.

Shanklin distributed samples of information about the Graduate Recruitment Fair and asked members to help get the information distributed to advisors.

Hightower is concerned that the course name of the integrity class remains on a student's transcript after it is completed. He thinks the course title should be removed from the transcript because he believes it is a “red flag” to employers and others who might see a transcript with this course listed.
