Call to Order

Old Business

Plagiarism

Carroll reported that the definition of plagiarism CAPP had forwarded to the Academic Affairs Committee was returned to CAPP because the language in the proposed definition is inconsistent with the definition used by the honors council. They were also unhappy with the tone of the document because the language and wording is not neutral. In particular they were unhappy with the word thievery. The Academic Affairs Committee recommended that we review the language and make it more consistent with the honor code definition.

Hightower said he was unable to find a definition of plagiarism on the Honor and Integrity System Web site. Carroll said there was a clear definition on the Web site. Using his computer, Perl accessed the honor Web site and was unable to find a definition of plagiarism.

Hightower moved that we recommend to the Academic Affairs Committee that we retain the definition from the University Handbook with the insertion of the following into paragraph b., “. . . from any type of medium (paper, film, or other forms of technology),” and add a paragraph from the graduate catalog regarding the importance of each discipline when considering plagiarism. That paragraph is to become paragraph c. (See attachment #1 for complete motion.) Shanklin seconded the motion. Perl agreed to meet with David Allen, Director of the Honor and Integrity System, and one of the University attorneys to discuss the wording of the proposed definition. The motion carried.

Final Exam Policy

Pence moved to rescind the following motion that was passed at the September meeting, “'Schedule once-weekly day course exams at their regular class meeting time during exam week.' (effective date: Fall 2008).” (see attachments #2 & #3) Ewanow seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Pence then moved to include once-weekly day courses in the regular examination schedule. Ewanow seconded the motion. The motion passed. Potential problems and potential conflicts will be shared with the Academic Affairs Committee when the motion is forwarded. Carroll said that this motion would be placed on the November agenda of Academic Affairs.

New Business

Social Security Numbers Printed on Class Rosters

Nielsen had a complaint from a department head that social security numbers were printed on class rosters. Since rosters will not be printed after summer of 2008, the committee recommended that the university continue to print the rosters until that time.
