CALL TO ORDER:

Ray Hightower convened the meeting at 10:30am, and turned the Chair over to Kevin Donnelly in accord with Robert's Rules of Order.

NEW BUSINESS:

This special meeting was called to discuss concerns for the 2004 SCMT policy. These involve the 75 minute class periods. The gap of 35 minutes in the 75 minute sequence of class periods (10:45-11:20am) is perceived to have created two concerns:

  1. The classes in the afternoon extend past 5:00pm to 5:20pm, causing problems for parents with children in childcare.

  2. It is problematic to schedule departmental/faculty seminars late in the day that do not extend beyond 5:00pm.

Ray Hightower prepared detailed handouts illustrating the standard class meeting time policies for 1979, 1990, and 2004. These handouts accompanied his presentation which included a preliminary review of data gathered from various class schedules. Ray also presented tentative conclusions and recommendations. He emphasized that the 2004 SCMT policy did not limit 75 minute periods to just TU like the 1990 policy; that the (10:45-11:20am) gap in the 75 minute sequence of periods had been referred to as being 45 minutes when it is really only 35 minutes, because a ten minute gap is required between all class periods; that CAPP had agreed to help resolve the need for scheduling high tech rooms for seminars; and that moving the 75 minute SCMT period from 4:05-5:20pm to 3:55-5:10pm would provide sufficient time (20 minutes) to pickup children from childcare facilities before 5:30pm (which is the time Ray found that the majority of these facilities close).

Following considerable discussion, CAPP members, unanimously, voted to accept the following recommendations to be forwarded to the Academic Affairs Committee (AAC):

  1. Leave the 2004 standard class meeting time (SCMT) policy in effect, using exceptions where reasonable (CAPP recommends moving the 75 minute SCMT of 4:05-5:20pm to 3:55-5:10pm).

  2. Continue studying concerns, and prepare any additional recommendations before the scheduling process begins for the spring 2006 semester.

  3. Communicate to the faculty the fact that the 2004 SCMT policy allows 75 minute class periods on Monday/Wednesday, Wednesday/Friday, and Monday/Friday if reasonable reasons, especially if a department is not moving to eliminate Friday classes.

David Stewart requested and Ray agreed to present his material at the next meeting of the ACC.
