Mike Perl convened the meeting.
Gunile DeVault distributed a proposed policy for Student Semester Final Examinations. She distributed copies of the line schedule for each college to the college's representative. She requested a meeting with each college to discuss the courses and final exam times. The committee agreed to contact Gunile for an appointment.
Mike Perl announced a holiday buffet has been scheduled in the Bluemont Room after the December meeting. Committee members are responsible for inviting their alternates and any previous committee members who have retired.
Alison Wheatley had one correction, a change of "interrupt" to "interpret", for the October 9, 2002 minutes.
Jackie Spears reported that students have requested 5 class days instead of 5 calendar days for Dead Week before finals. The committee suggested Jackie take the request to Faculty Senate.
Jackie Spears reported the Policy for Standard Class Times would be on the Faculty Senate's agenda in December. She had three concerns:
Last fall the committee discussed a letter from the Office of Student Life concerning a student's absences. Mike Perl distributed a letter from Susan Scott dated August 27, 1993, with the Student Absence Notification Policy included. Carla Jones, current director of the office of Student Life, agreed to continue the policy as stated in this letter.
Mike Perl requested the form require the Department Head's signature. Don Foster will make the addition to the form.
The catalog states a student must get permission from the Dean's office to enroll in more than 18 hours. Alison Wheatley requested that KATS limit students to 18 hours so the Dean's office does not have to check students' schedules by hand. Don Foster reported that the KATS software couldn't stop enrollments exactly at 18 hours. This will be corrected with the new Oracle system. The committee discussed alternatives to this problem. Some colleges require students to get approval for overloads or all the courses are dropped. Don Foster will check again with the programmers to see if this programming change could be made.
Implementation of the 45 hours Upper Division RuleRay Hightower distributed a document concerning the 45-hour upper division rule to be discussed at the next meeting.
Mike Perl adjourned the meeting.
