Old Business:

Policy for Standard Class Times for Summer Semester.

Jackie Spears and Ray Hightower presented a draft for a policy for Summer and Inter-session Class Schedules. They had reviewed the schedule of Summer 2002 and said it was 'chaotic'. Six week sessions overlapped with intersession and faculty started whenever they chose at whatever time they chose. It was not a space issue but a scheduling issue. Students over enrolled and the quality of work declined. They recommended an Inter-session time with no overlap of summer school, an 8-week session starting the first Monday in June, a 4-week session starting the first week in June and a second 4-week session starting the first Monday following the end of the first 4-week session. The 1-2-3 week courses would have to fit within a 4-week period without overlapping the two 4-week sessions. It was also stated that 3-hour courses meeting MTWUF were 60 minute periods and classes meeting MTWU would use 80 minute periods. It was suggested that classes could meet in the mornings with labs scheduled in the afternoons. Ray & Jackie will work on the policy and will email it to the committee to discuss and approve at the April meeting.

ORC Request Form

Ray Hightower presented an ORC form for discussion. Suggestions for changes and comparisons to a form present by Gunile DeVault were made. Ray will bring another form to the April meeting.

Non-Standard Class Meeting Time Petition

Gunile DeVault distributed the Non-Standard Class Meeting Time Petition form in which she had added "the CAPP Chair" to the distribution of the form. By consensus, the committee agreed this form will be used for all future requests.

New Business:

Change of Group Exam Times for Spanish Courses (Robert Corum)

Mike Perl presented a letter from Robert Corum requesting that the group exam times for Spanish 161,162, and 261 be removed from the schedule. Gunile DeVault stated that the request had been made to the Registrar's office and the removal of the courses from the group exams had already been done. It was suggested during discussion that a letter be sent approving the request and stating the expected finals be given according to the final exam schedule. Ray Hightower moved to approve the request with the qualification that a letter be sent to Robert Corum. Motion seconded and carried. Jackie Spears will send Mike information on final exam times for language courses.

Request for Non-Standard Class Meeting Times for Flight courses

Nancy Mosier distributed a request for non-standard class times for the flight courses. The committee had approved the request in the December 12, 2002 meeting but at that time the request form had not been developed. Mike Perl stated he would sign the request. It was then determined that Nancy put a list together of courses that had been approved for non-standard class times. All committee members are to send Nancy copies and/or originals of approved requests. The committee decided the secretary should keep all approved requests so the requests can be reviewed on an annual basis.

Letter Regarding Student Illness

Mike Perl asked if any of the colleges encourage 'incompletes' be given in the letters sent to faculty concerning student illnesses. He had been asked to do that and was told the other colleges encouraged faculty to give 'incompletes'. None of the members indicated they encouraged 'incompletes'. Discussion concerning the student illness letter to the faculty followed. It was the consensus of the committee that the letter should be a notification about the student illness and not suggest what action should be taken by the faculty.

Other Items:
Report from Faculty Senate Academic Affairs Committee

Jackie Spears gave the committee an informational up-date concerning several policy discussions in Faculty Senate.

  1. Revision to the final exam policy: The revision will state that no unit exams can be given during the final 7 days instead of the final 5 days.
  2. Revision to the Open House policy: Classes will be dismissed after 2:30. If a course being dismissed after 2:30 is one section of a multiple section course, dismissal will be at the discretion of the faculty member.
  3. Faculty want to be notified when students drop a course. They feel they are out of the 'loop'.
Adjournment:

Ray Hightower moved to adjourn the meeting. Motion was seconded and carried.

Next Meeting:

Wednesday, April 9, 2003

Respectfully Submitted by Nancy Mosier
